I was so excited to be able to review the organic palm shortening from Tropical Traditions – for a number of reasons. I love to try new things, and I get to make fried foods I wouldn’t normally. Doughnuts, french fries, fried chicken, home fries… yum. Not to mention I used it a number of times for greasing my bread pans for baking bread. I used it to grease the cookie sheets for baking cookies. I did make monkey bread and biscuits with it too. Plus its
great for making popcorn with. We eat lots of that. Its a good snack you know, plus you can make lots of things with it. {more about that in another post.} It was such a wonderful thing to have. I just loved it!
I was sent the smallest size they have – a gallon bucket. I opened the bucket when I received it and I was expecting to smell something. I’m not sure the smell I was expecting… but I didn’t get that smell. There was none. I later found out why. “Since it has been separated from some of the unsaturated portion of the oil, it is colorless and odorless, and will not affect the taste of foods like Virgin Palm Oil does.” WOW. That’s great if you need a shortening that you can add that won’t put its own taste in whatever you’re making. I thought it did a good job on the monkey bread I made. {more about that in another post. :} I was also going to make a pie crust with it, as I’ve never tried using shortening, on account we don’t buy any other kind than organic and they don’t carry it around here. But I never got to. Maybe I will if I get some more palm shortening.
This next info is from the site page for Palm Shortening, which you can take a look at here.
Palm shortening is derived from palm oil (read about Virgin Palm Oil here). In its natural state, palm oil is a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, with most of the unsaturated fat being monounsaturated fat. Palm shortening is palm oil that has some of its unsaturated fats removed, giving it a very firm texture, and high melting point. The melting point of our Organic Palm Shortening is 97 degrees F., making it very shelf stable. It is NOT hydrogenised, and contains NO trans fats! It is great for deep-fat frying and baking, and is not prone to rancidity. Since it has been separated from some of the unsaturated portion of the oil, it is colorless and odorless, and will not affect the taste of foods like Virgin Palm Oil does. If taste is needed in applications, then Virgin Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, or Sesame Oil can be added for great baked or fried foods! (Read the history of Palm Oil here.)
I am so happy that I will be able to bless someone else by having a giveaway for a gallon of Organic Palm Shortening. :) Yes, one of my lucky readers gets to try the shortening for themselves. Make doughnuts, I tell you. You won’t regret it. I’ve got a recipe I can share with you if you want it. :)
