I have always bought tortillas at the store until recently. One night we all wanted burritos and I didn’t have any tortillas, so I went to the internet and found a recipe! My recipe is similar to yours, only I add 1-1/2 tsp. of baking powder. It’s supposed to make them lighter.

I never thought about putting them in the oven after cooking them. Won’t they dry out in there? I have just been covering mine with a tea towel, then put them in a ziplock bag with a damp paper towel and put them in the microwave for a minute and it softens them right up! :)

They are easy to make! I roll them out til they’re paper thin and the dough holds together nicely. It’s amazing! I wish my pie dough held up as well!

@ Mrs. Self – Thank you for your comment. Dad grew up in NM and they have a really good tortilla place there he loves tortillas from, but since we don’t live there anymore, he doesn’t get them. :(

Until this week, I’ve put baking powder in the recipe as well. The actual recipe calls for baking powder but since it is Passover week, no leaven. So I took it out and they turned out fine.

As for the tortillas drying out in the oven – no they did not. It took me 45 minutes to make all of the ones I made (I doubled the recipe for our family) and stuck them in as I made them. If you keep a lid on them in the oven they won’t dry out.

We don’t have a microwave anymore, actually. We heat things up on the stove or eat ‘em cold. :) Microwaves aren’t good for you. :)

Thank you for stopping by! It was nice getting a comment from you. (((HUGS)))

Love,
~ Miss Rachel

Thanks for sharing, Rachel! I really would love to make my own tortillas. I’ve done it once and it was such a pain, took too long, and seemed like way more effort than it was worth. But after reading your post, I’ll be trying them again.

Blessings,
Mrs G :D

I’m just curious… do you think you could substitute coconut oil for the shortening since it has a similar consistency? I am dying to try this recipe, but we usually don’t have any shortening and I am not sure if we do now or not!

Thanks, Rachel! I was going to ask you for this one, anyway! Your Dad said dinner was great that night!

Thanks, Rachel. I tried making some a few years ago, but they turned out crumbly. I will have to give your recipe a try.

Blessings,
