Saturday Psalm & Praise: The Old Rugged Cross

1 Corinthians 1:18

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness;

but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”

Saturday Psalm & PraiseI believe I already posted The Old Rugged Cross as a Saturday Psalm & Praise before. When I read the accompanying scripture I had saved with it on a word document, I just knew it was today’s post. “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness.” And “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.Psalm 14:1

The fool hath said… I certainly do not want that written about me. I don’t want the word fool used in the same sentence! There are so many things we are fooled by, though, even as Believers. Oh Lord, help me to walk in your ways. Help me to search out your old paths and look and walk therein. Show me, Lord. Open my eyes, give me a willing heart to receive your word, that I might not be fooled!

I pray for courage to cling to you, Lord, to the Old Rugged Cross. Some folks say it is a crutch. I say it is a beacon in the darkness of a failing and hopeless world. Thank you for the cross, Jesus. Thank you for the cross for my children and my family and my friends. Thank you for the cross for the stranger, the homeless, the mom, the dad. Thank you for the cross for all.

The Old Rugged Cross

Words and music by George Bennard – 1913

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

The emblem of suffering and shame;

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain.

*

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

*

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,

Has a wondrous attraction for me;

For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above

To bear it to dark Calvary.

*

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

*

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,

A wondrous beauty I see,

For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,

To pardon and sanctify me.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

*

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;

Its shame and reproach gladly bear;

Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,

Where His glory forever I’ll share.

*

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

What do you cherish? Do you cherish your beloved? Your children? Your job, your car, your friends? What do you cherish?

cher·ish

  1. to hold or treat as dear; feel love for
  2. to care for tenderly; nurture
  3. to cling fondly or inveterately to

Can you believe the third meaning of the word “cherish”? “to cling fondly or inveterately to.” Wow.

Do you cherish your Lord? Do you cherish the One True God and His Son, Jesus?

Do you cherish The Old Rugged Cross?

blessings,

Jacque Sig

    Thank you for posting your Saturday Psalm and Praise! I miss it when it’s not there on Saturday morning (but isn’t 3:29 a.m. a little early for the computer?)

    I am going to be moving over here eventually. I love HSB. I will not close my blog there, but I am hoping to get this place cleaned up and use it as home very soon!! I will be posting everything here too!

    Yes it is, Debra. Besides the fact that I am a recovering night owl, Caleb has had a fever for the past two nights, and I find it harder to sleep and wake up every twenty minutes to get up and take him potty!

    Thanks so much for reading my Saturday Psalm & Praise. I have always loved Psalms and old hymns, but since I started the meme, the hymns have really become a part of our whole family.

Welcome

Hello friends and welcome! The coffee is fresh, the tea is hot, so pull up a comfy chair and sit with me for a bit.

Who am I? Nobody special; just a flawed wife and mom, daughter, sister, and friend chosen by Yahveh to follow and tell about him.

Jacque Mrs. Jacque Dixon and her husband, Matt, train their nine children up in Yahveh's narrow way, home schooling on their small homestead in Indiana. She is co-owner and Manager of Gleaning the Harvest, a mission founded by the Dixons, presenting widowed/single mother home school families to Yahweh's people. She is also owner and publisher of Training Sons to Be Men, and Training Daughters, Teaching Wives. Walking Therein is where Jacque writes encouraging home school articles, articles of faith, and the daily lives of the Dixon family.
